"A star-spangled abbreviation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 18:29:31

Q: I’m trying to evaluate out the proper way to decrease United States given that I’ve seen it in different ways. Which is correct/proper: US. U. S.. USA or U. S. A.?A: Some dictionaries and style guides like the dotted versions while others advise the dotless ones but both are acceptable. In command dotted abbreviations are falling out of advance so I’d go for the dotless ones. Oops! I’ve just noticed that I’ve been using dots with “US” on The Grammarphobia communicate. From now on no more dots. As for “US” vs. “USA,” they're equally acceptable as nouns though US is preferred as an adjective (“US products,” “US policy,” “the US economy”).

"[Repost] Ma'oz Tzur and the Star Spangled Banner--the never-ending ..." posted by ~Ray

Are you always embarrassed when they sing Maoz Tzur in publicbecause all you can remember is the first verse? I am. Well here is the back up verse in transliteration courtesy of which also provides the Hebrew text: Ra'ot sav'ah nafshi b'yagon kochi kilah. Chayai meireru b'koshi b'shiabud malchut eglah. Uv'yado hagdolah hotzi et hasgulah. Cheil Par'oh vechol zar'oh yardu khe-even mtzulah. Is it my imagination or do you really need to stuff syllables at the end? And while we're at it here is the second compose of the Star-Spangled Banner from the same : On the border dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,What is that which the blow o'er the towering steep,As it fitfully blows half conceals half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,In full glory reflected now shines on the be adrift;'Tis the star-spangled banner: oh long may it waveO'er the land of the free and the domiciliate of the brave. Just gotta play air guitar to that one.

"Star Spangled . . . oops" posted by ~Ray

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sports in America go away with the. The Dolphins- Steelers game was an exception. Rushing to mouth the nationally televised matchup following a 25- minute weather decelerate the NFL chose to skip the anthem Monday night before Miami played Pittsburgh. The game started without any of the traditional pregame ceremonies except the coin toss and neither aggroup was introduced on the public address system. games would be OK with me. It doesn”t have a thing to do with patriotism. Well. I guess it does in a way: It cheapens patriotism and makes the anthem less special than it should be when it is played on more appropriate occasions. There was no fan reaction to Monday’s omission and no veterans groups seemed to have complained. Takes me back to a measure when they played GOD BLESS AMERICA (Kate Smith) at FLYERS hockey games…and almost every time they played it…Philly WON. The feature Spangled Banner at the NFL Opening Kickoff yesterday (September 6th). Though a bit 'off' in places. Keyshia gave a decent rendition. Not sure the choir was needed though (listens again.. yes they were lol). She looked a hott mess. I did not like the alter up or the hair. She needed the choir to act her from going on too desire on ripples of trying to sound good. She sounded ok. I just need someone like Whitney Houston to do the feature gleam Banner. Someone with a express.
